![]() ![]() Courses | Writing and Editing | Fees ![]() I am a freelance writer, editor and teacher of creative writing and painting. I have finished a non-fiction book, State of the Heart, about the journey to India for my partner’s heart surgery. It will be published soon by New Harbinger Publishing Company. I have taught creative writing to children and adults of all ages in classrooms, retirement homes, summer camps, shelters, prisons, at conferences and workshops across the southeast. (Click on "Courses" for a list of upcoming classes and workshops.) I offer critiques of your own work, or can help you create new written copy for press releases, ads, marketing materials, feature stories, or your website. (Click on "Writing and Editing") I am grateful for the support of Frame Warehouse in Durham. Playing with Paint - at the artist’s studio
Here’s a course for anyone who has ever said, “I’m just not artistic,” or “I’m not creative at all!” but who is secretly attracted to the world of painting. Get acquainted with PAINT in a safe, non-threatening, non-competitive environment. We’ll play with colors and textures, with shapes and patterns, experiment with the brush and anything else we think of to paint with. Instead of setting out copy what we see, we'll play with paint and see what we have created. Playing with Paint is designed to allow you the luxury of creating at your own pace, focusing on possibilities instead of the results. Repeating students are welcome to come and try new things and to continue independent projects. This workshop is for poets who are ready for constructive comments about their own drafts-in-progress. We will focus on poetry -- the poems you intend to write and the discoveries you make in the actual writing of them. We will share our own work and take a look at the work of contemporary poets. Join us for an informal gathering, for feedback, inspiration, and ideas about how to get inside the poem that seems too hard to write. (writing assignments determined by class interest; available upon request.) Feel free to just come to read and listen while your muse is warming up.* Class is held in my Carrboro home. (A poetic, loving cat lives here too.) * For those who have poetry already written, please bring 10 copies of a draft you are working on. * Please communicate any special needs or concerns you have. Who Uses My Services?
Memoir Assistance Have you ever said, “I should write these things down!” Your life is unique, your experiences are of great interest to your family and friends. A written record of them will be priceless to your grandchildren and great grandchildren when they grow up. But often, just the idea of writing about our own life is a daunting task. It’s overwhelming. Where do you start? Do you have to go in chronological order? What if you can’t remember some things? Not to worry. I am a professional writer living in Carrboro. I will help you tease out the hidden gems of your life – those quirky tales that make your grandchildren laugh, or still can bring tears to your eyes. You do not need to physically write one single word if you don’t want to – I’ll do the writing! All you need is a genuine desire to get some of these stories down on paper. You will undoubtedly be surprised at all you do remember, once we get started. Together, we will create some lasting memory of your story -- maybe the beginning of a memoir, or a story, or even some poems. Don’t worry about the end result. My services are custom-designed to fit your ideas and your schedule. I will come to you, and we can work together for one hour, or for one year. You decide how long we meet and when we are finished. You are in charge. This is your story. Let’s get started! Fees: I will contract by the hour or by the project. ($35/hour) Will work for two hours or two months. Contact me to discuss your ideas.
